How Yoga Helps You Beat Stress

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

We are living lives which have simply become to difficult to handle. We find that we do not have enough time to finish even our daily chores, we are always in a rush when it comes to leaving for work, or returning home from work rushing the children to school, pushing our way through crowds on the pavements or trains or even making our way through the mad chaotic traffic snarls that occur daily on the roads. We find that throughout the day from the moment we awake we have to face so many situations that can pressurize us. We are always faced with numerous problems like payment of bills, working within a budget so that our expenses do not shoot up, problems that children bring up, late night chores etc. All these demands put us through a whole lot of physical and emotional problems as they require us to use tremendous energy to handle them successfully.
It is not only people who run households who come under extreme pressure. It is the same in the work world too. Here people have to meet deadlines, solve problems, handle misunderstandings with other employees, and take care of crisis and a whole lot of other things that are associated with the world of work. Many people try their level best to handle and manage all of these pressures quite effectively but they break down when they face a major crisis in their lives along with all their work pressures.
When people face pressure or stress they all tend to react in different ways. Some people tend to panic when they are unable to handle a tense situation while others will either loose their temper or become aggressive or they will just remain stunned. These minor irritations and their inability to handle tense moments often manifest themselves in the physical form in the body in the form of headaches, hives, stomach disorders, insomnia, backaches, neck pain and nervous breakdown.
It is possible that we do not allow ourselves to become miserable or go into depression when we face pressure if we make up our minds not to. It is here that practicing yoga is of enormous help as it helps the person to deal with such stress causing situations with ease without getting worked up. Yoga is effective in helping you not only achieve spiritual freedom but also help you to shape your destiny. Yoga can help you overcome those moments of stress and confusion so that you can think more clearly. With a clear and relaxed mind we can solve many problems.
People often used to wonder how practicing yoga was going to help solve their problems. How you may wonder can some one who is doing a few breathing techniques, physical postures can help one deal with stress related problems like handling an over stretched home budget, dealing with office tensions and other problems.
But this is what yoga is all about. Researches and scientists have all along known that the body and mind were connected and all that affects the mind is also going to have affects on the body or physical self. Though the medical fraternity became aware of this on in the last century or so, those who have practiced Yoga have known about it for ages. People who face emotional problems are often found suffering from ailments which affect the body like headaches, back pain etc. Yoga teaches us to remain in a state of relaxation so that we can handle all our tensions and problems with a far clearer mind.

Yoga Positions – Positive Energy Flow

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Practicing yoga can be wonderfully beneficial to both the body and the mind. It is through a series of yoga positions that one can reach a state of true inner peace and tranquility. Various yoga poses can also promote a positive energy flow throughout the body.
By slowly executing the yoga pose with a concentrated effort, you will not only train your body but also your mind. You should start out slow and practice them daily, building up your repetitions, as well as, the number of poses you can master. Poses consist of warm-up, standing, seated, twist yoga, supreme, inverted postures and balance, backbends and finishing poses.
One of the most basic yoga standing poses is the triangular pose, or the trikonasana. To do this pose, standing, position your legs slightly farther apart than your shoulders with feet facing straight. Turn you right foot out and your left foot in, while keeping your hips straight. Your arms should be raised to shoulder level. Lower your right arm, stretching as far down the right leg as is comfortable, while raising the left arm over your head. Straighten your body to the beginning position and repeat on other side. This pose will tone your leg and abdominal muscles, as well as, promote lower back health.
Perhaps one of the most known yoga poses is the lotus pose, or the padmasana. It is a seated pose that requires flexibility. You will place your right foot on your left thigh with the foot facing upward. Similarly, place your left foot on your right thigh with that foot facing upward also. Next, lay the palms of your hand on their corresponding thighs also facing upward. This pose is usually done in meditation and will strengthen your legs and ankles, as well as, increase your flexibility. It relaxes the person and promotes good posture.
One of the yoga poses that will rotate the spine is the half spinal twist, or the Ardha Matsyendrasana. To begin, kneel on your heels with your legs together. Sit to the right of this position and place your left leg over your right with your foot on the outside of your right knee. Keeping your spine straight, bring your right heel close to your buttocks and stretch your arms out to shoulder level. Bring your right arm over your left knee and hold your left foot. Place your left hand on the floor behind you. Gently twist as far to the left as possible. This pose will tone your spinal muscles and ligaments.
One of the basic yoga poses, often called the king of the asanas, is the headstand or the Sushasana. In performing this, you will begin in a kneeling position with the elbows and hands on the floor in front of you. Interlock your fingers and put your head between your hands. Push up on your toes, bringing your legs extended to an upright position. Focus on a point in front of you and keep your body straight and balanced. This pose will strengthen the neck and back and, also, reduce stress and fatigue.
These are just a few of the numerous poses and positions taught in the yoga world. They are meant to strengthen different parts of your body, as well as, relax it. The key in yoga is to start off slowly and gently until you have mastered each pose. The results will be beneficial to your health and mind. At first you may not be able to correctly assume the positions yoga practices, but through repeated efforts you will gain the flexibility to master each pose and experience the benefits each has to offer.

Weight Loss – Valuable Tips of Yoga

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Yoga deep breathing helps in increasing the oxygen intake to the body cells, including the fat cells. This results into burning up of fat cells. Another amazing aspect of Yoga is that it reduces anxiety which, in turn, reduces anxious eating. It is human tendency that whenever we are tensed we tend to swallow our food without deriving much satisfaction and pleasure. In the process we end up eating more. On the other hand, if we approach our meals with better mood, we tend to be less likely to overeat in a worried effort to calm our anxieties. Yoga plays an important role in making us more calm and cool.

During yoga practise you work your whole body, stretching and toning your muscles, streamlining and firming them. This gives you a lean firm body shape as opposed to the bulkier, short muscles you might get from weight training. With yoga you build strong lean muscle tissue which burn calories even while you are at rest.

Yoga is about balance. Balance in eating, balance in drinking, balance in exercise, balance in purporting yourself. Yes, too fat is out of balance, as is too thin, but neither is a crime punishable by not being able to stretch.Sun Salutations: 24 sun salutations a day, at a speed of 4 rounds in a minute, can provide benefits altogether of both asanas and exercises. Is Yoga for the Face Really Yoga?

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Contortions, puckers and grimaces are the basis of a new facial movement genre that is being touted as yoga for the face. Not only is this an insult to our common sense, it is easy to imagine that every yogi could be offended by these movements that produce lines and wrinkles.
Over the years snake oil salesmen have hoped their hype would result in a windfall of cash. They tout the latest and greatest cures with potions that no one has tested hoping that you, the hopeful, unsuspecting public, will buy into their spiel that will line their pockets with your hard earned dollars.
A well-respected magazine and a news leader recently reviewed these facial movements. There was no mention of results and there were no credible testimonials to accompany the information. What we did see were photos of facial contortions, puckers and grimaces.
These photos clearly demonstrate how wrinkles are formed. When you repetitively create lines and wrinkles with contortions and the like, it is possible that the face will begin to resemble that look. Think frown lines. If you have them it is because you have repetitively made that grimace over and over again.
The muscles and skin work together to create the look your face portrays; muscles that are strong support the skin…muscles that are lax allow the skin to wrinkle. Strong muscles plus energized skin equals a youthful appearance.
Using resistance with anchoring techniques is the only way to develop stronger facial muscles. Here’s why: facial muscles attach to bone only on one end, the other end attaches to skin or another muscle. Without anchoring and resistance the muscles cannot achieve a contraction.
Consider this: open your mouth wide, now close it and open it three times. Sure you might feel a slight stirring in the lower face muscles but add resistance by placing the forefinger and the middle finger lightly on your bottom teeth. Open your mouth. Push your fingertips downward as you try to close your mouth. Aha! This is resistance you can definitely feel the muscles respond under your chin and up the sides of your face.
Without the resistance, the movement is merely a contortion. There is nothing significant that could truly change the shape and contour of your neck and face if you do not have resistance and contraction.
No matter what the marketing gimmick if you are hoping that a grimace, a pucker, a twist or a contortion is going to give you a younger looking face, you will be disappointed.
Talking, laughing, yelling at your kids, singing – the normal everyday activities will not stop muscles from elongating. It is the elongation of our facial muscles that produce that aged look.
Stopping the muscles from pooling as they head downward into other muscles requires action that is far greater than twists and puckers.
Our bodies experience slack muscles: our waists thicken, arms become flabby and our hips can change shape all because of atrophied muscles.
When you want to revamp your body, you head to the gym, drag out weights and hit the machines. You begin contracting those muscles using resistance.
The muscles in the body just like the muscles in the face will plump up and reposition when they are proficiently exercised. Without the resistance and contraction of the muscles, the body, like the face, will not receive the results you desire.
Anchoring helps isolate the facial muscles. Using your fingers and thumbs will create the needed resistance to lift a sagging forehead, heavy cheeks and even jowls and pouches. This type of facial exercise is the ultimate natural cosmetic enhancement because it can lift, tighten and tone droopy muscles and skin in hardly any time at all.
You know the risks and complications of surgery and invasive procedures but do you know that injecting foreign substances is risky, too? Looking younger in today’s society has triggered an avalanche of new drugs, topical preparations, bizarre surgery techniques and even a resurgence of contortions first introduced in the 60’s.
Be savvy. If you want your face to look and feel years younger safely without creating lines and wrinkles rely on isometric and resistance exercises that promote optimum results in an all natural way.
The process is easy and it only takes a few minutes a day in the privacy of your home to transform your tired, droopy face into one that is toned, tightened and lifted.
No puckers please!
